Light exploded, shattering into multi-angled rays that scattered across the dancefloor, bobbing and weaving to the rhythm as the DJ amped up the energy and the crowd roared its approval. The music was so loud that Karissa could feel the bass in her chest, making her bones vibrate and her ears buzz, but she didn’t give a fuck as the next platter of shots appeared in front of her. A round of cheers erupted from the other girls as she snagged her glass of pink something and raised it up.
“To Tawny!” Alecia shouted, and everyone cheered again before knocking back the fifth — or was that the sixth? — shot in the short time they’d been there. Sugar sweet alcohol poured down her throat to join its sisters in her belly, and she set the glass back on the tray so the server could wander off into the crowd.
It was Tawny’s birthday, and that meant partying in the club district of New Paraja. Not like Tawny wasn’t there every other fucking Friday night, but tonight was an absolute requirement. “Come on, bitches! I want to fucking dance!” she shouted, standing up.
“Fuck yeah!” Karissa answered as she slid out and pulled Tawny up from the curved booth. One benefit to having friends who clubbed all the time was the ability to get a reserved table in what had to be the hottest dance club for the moment — which meant there was no need to leave someone watching the table as they all moved onto the dance floor.
In a second they were all shifting to the beat, hips rolling, short skirts climbing up their thighs as they dipped and moved to the music. Tawny moved close, raising her voice to yell over the noise. “I’m so fucking glad you came out!”
“You think I’d miss your birthday?” Karissa shouted back, laughing as Tawny turned around to grind back against her, and she spanked her ass through the neon-pink skirt. That made Tawny jump away, immediately dancing again as her laughter was swallowed by the next crescendo in the song. Alecia with her long, multi-colored locks had already caught the attention of some guy who had his hands on her hips and his mouth to her ear. Sunei was using all five feet of her body to spin, twist, and shape herself to the rhythms pulsing around them. Brigin was singing along to the vocals, tucked close to her girlfriend Mailoe, the envy of so many eyes near them. It was a perfect night already.
Being with her best friends made it easy to close her eyes and let go, enjoying it when she felt a large male presence behind her, his hand skirting her waist to tug her closer to his front. The alcohol swarmed her bloodstream, and her head swam as she rubbed against him, grinning as she opened her eyes to find Tawny winking at her.
“Love you!” she shouted, and Tawny blew a kiss back just before she turned into the arms of a male who wanted to dance.
“Girlfriend?” the gruff voice against her ear asked, and she shook her head.
“Best fucking friend!” she answered, leaning her head back so he could hear, and she felt his laughter as they continued to move to the beat.
Tamberlin ‘Tawny’ Curith was her BFF. They’d met in primary school after her family had moved to New Paraja. First day in Grade Two she’d told Tamberlin that she loved her golden skin with the stripes, and she’d said the same about Karissa’s violet hair and too-pale skin — after that, they had been inseparable. Tamberlin had become Tawny, because it was way easier to shout across the playground, and they’d collected the rest of their friends over too many years in school.
Now they were officially adults, still best friends regardless of their different races, and about to get completely wasted celebrating. “Hey, hey!” Tawny called out as a tall, thin male walked through the crowd with a tray of neon-colored tubes of drinks.
He crouched down for everyone to snag one, and she kissed the male on the cheek, likely shouted their table number in his ear, and then she was holding the drink aloft so that it caught the black lights and glowed like something not meant for consumption.
“Down the hatch!” Karissa called out, and the girls laughed as it was upended. As soon as the liquid was gone, the tube started to dissolve in her hand and she tossed it down with the rest of them, laughing as the sparkling liquid spread across the dance floor to catch the lights. The clubs were always coming up with new ways to draw customers in, and that had to be one of the cooler ones.
“Did you see that?” Alecia shouted, and Karissa nodded back, rocking to the heavy bass with the male behind her. Several neon-colored shots later, and over an hour of dancing and singing along, Tawny was finally sweat-soaked enough to grab her wrist and drag her back to their table.
“Holy shit, this is the best birthday ever!” she said as she slid along the curved booth to the middle.
“Better than last year when Brigin got you those Endasca strippers? Personally, I think that was better.” A playful shove from her bestie had them both laughing again.
“Okay, maybe not that good, but still this was exactly what I needed. Drinks, my girls, and some stupid hot males to dance with.” Tawny grinned as the other girls wandered back, Mailoe and Brigin stopping beside the table to make out.
“Get it!” Karissa shouted, whistling and cheering as Brigin flipped them all off behind Mailoe’s back, but quickly returned to rubbing against her girlfriend.
“You’re just jealous,” Brigin said as she finally took a seat and pulled Mailoe into her lap.
“Whatever, I’m just fucking happy for you. Plus, we like Mailoe.”
“I love you bitches, too,” Mailoe replied before waving at the next waiter to pass near them. “A round!”
“See? This is why we love Mailoe,” Alecia added, laughing when Brigin rolled her eyes. “Just don’t break up with her and you’ll never have to find out who we’d keep around!”
“You’re such a bitch!” Brigin shouted through a laugh, and then Mailoe turned her face so they could kiss again.
Rolling her eyes, Karissa leaned closer to Tawny. “Speaking of breaking up, are you still with Denze?”
“He won’t stop calling me, sending me messages. It’s so pathetic. What happened to playing hard to get?” Tawny bit down on her dark lips, shrugging a shoulder as she checked out the nearest half-dressed hottie rocking a six-pack.
“I think you are the one that’s supposed to play hard to get,” Karissa answered, grinning as she enjoyed the people watching as they cooled down. Her sweat-slicked skin was still sticking to the leather behind her back, but that’s what she got for wearing a
backless top dancing.
The next round arrived and they had just finished setting the glasses down when a guy with stark white hair done in a mohawk slid up to the table with a manic grin. “TAWNY! I’m so glad you really showed up.”
“Fuck! I’ve been looking everywhere for you, Niken,” she yelled as she leaned over the table to show off her cleavage and bump fists.
“Pfft, I’m always around, but I brought you a birthday present, beautiful.” With a flourish, he produced a small, plastic vial and held it out. “Something to make you really enjoy your day.”
Tawny’s eyes lit up as she snagged it from him, holding it up to the flashing, multi-colored lights. “Oooo, what is it?”
“It’s called Clarity. It opens your mind, lets you be who you truly are. Absolutely the best fucking stuff out here right now. I’ve tried it and—”
“Sounds awesome!” Tawny cut him off, breaking the plastic top away to tilt it back into her mouth.
Niken laughed and raised his hand with a handful of other little plastic vials. “Ladies? Any friend of Tawny’s is a friend of mine. Ready to party?” His eyes were golden, like the many hues of amber, and as he looked around at each of them his smile became a dare.
“Time to party, girls!” Tawny encouraged, nudging Karissa forward with an arm behind her back, and with a laugh she took one of the proffered vials and twisted off the top, holding it up for the others to catch up. “DO IT!”
Without another word they all upended them, and it tasted like nothing as it coated her tongue and moved down her throat. Niken slapped his hand on the table and cheered, “Enjoy, ladies!”
Turning on his heel, he was off into the crowd, and everyone was bustling out of the booth to get back to dancing. It was fun moving to the beat, body rolling as the alcohol hum amplified, but the first sign of the drug kicking in was heat. It washed up Karissa’s spine, focusing at the nape of her neck for a moment before it slid up to the crown of her head and dripped down her front.
Her nipples hardened against her top, and as the heat moved lower she felt her clit pounding along with the bass. The colors around her became sharper, the scent of alcohol and sweat had her breathing deep, and she grinned as Tawny leaned closer. “You feel it?”
“Fuck yeah, I feel it! Amazing!” Spinning in place, Tawny started bouncing on her toes to the music, and Karissa tried to keep up, but the heat was distracting. It was like she couldn’t get a full breath, and every breath was full of such tempting scents. The nearest male dancing with Alecia smelled good, and she moved a little closer, sandwiching him between her and Alecia, which had him laughing and reaching back to cup her ass.
Pressing her nose against his back, she inhaled deep, but something was missing. Turning, she caught the eye of another male, and he moved close, continuing to move to the beat as she closed the gap and wrapped her arms around his neck. Rubbing against him wasn’t strange, not in the dance club, but as she took another deep breath of his skin her nose wrinkled.
Not right.
In fact, the smell made her stomach turn, her belly twisting and tightening for a moment, and the sudden urge to be sick rushed through her. Pushing away from him she grabbed Tawny’s arm and shouted over the noise, “I’m grabbing some water!”
“Okay! Come back!”
“Right!” Karissa yelled, weaving her way through the thick press of the crowd towards the bar. The scents of everyone overwhelmed her, tempting her to breathe in as if she could taste them on her tongue, but none of it was enough to keep her attention for long. The glowing lights reflecting off the bottles were a pleasant distraction for a moment, but then one of the bartenders took over the space she was staring at.
“What can I get you?”
“WATER!” It took a shout to get the word out of her throat, and he just nodded and handed over a bottle of water.
“Table or tab?”
“Table twenty-seven!”
“Cool.” Walking off to the next customer, the bartender glanced back at her a few times, but she ignored him, unscrewed the top, and drank. Ice cold, clean, but it made her stomach cramp harder. Buckling, she caught herself on the edge of the bar, unnoticed by the people packed tightly around her. She was too hot, the club was too stifling, and if she didn’t get some air she knew she’d be bent over one of the disgusting toilets in the back emptying her stomach.
“Fuck,” she muttered to herself, pulling her phone out of the secure pouch hidden in the side of her bra. Pulling up her last message to Tawny she sent: I think your bday present didn’t agree with me, heading home to sleep it off. Love you, and happy bday!
As her stomach roiled, and the heat became unbearable, Karissa moved towards the exit, holding up the bottle of water in one hand and her phone in the other to show them she wasn’t leaving with alcohol. The street was lit up with neon blues and pinks and greens, still wet from the rain and reflecting it all back in a shimmering blur. It was beautiful, distracting, and she couldn’t take her eyes off it as she headed towards the rail station. So many people laughing on the sidewalks, a couple making out against a wall, the club district was all about freedom and love. It was the dirtiest part of New Paraja, but still the best.
Society’s expectations couldn’t reach people here, because this was the place they didn’t matter. Dance clubs, sex clubs, alcohol, drugs — they were open to everyone regardless of race, regardless of who you wanted to fuck.
Normally, Karissa would be the one closing down the club with Tawny, but she’d just ruin her BFF’s birthday if she hung around and had to be babysat in the bathroom. She could make it up to her another night.
“Shit!” Stumbling, she caught herself against a wall as a vicious cramp tightened her lower belly, pain zinging through her. She gasped as it passed, a liquid rush between her thighs that made her groan. “No fucking way.”
Her period? That had been two weeks before, she wasn’t due, but she couldn’t think of anything else as she looked down the block towards the rail station, rising up off the street, two flights of stairs up, to take the train above the road and back towards her district of the city.
Unfortunately, as she tapped out another text to Tawny to say she was catching the train home, she noticed a group of males on her side of the street between her and the stairs.
Fucking perfect.
Glancing up and down the road, she waited for a car to pass and then crossed to the other side, moving steadily towards the rail station. The metallic rattle of the train, followed by the screech of brakes as it stopped ahead, made her groan. Missing the train would be bad, potentially dangerous. On a normal night she would have just run for the train, but with the twisting ache in her abdomen and the heat still burning in her skin, she didn’t have the energy.
At least, until she looked over her shoulder and saw the males crossing the street to her side. One was already on the sidewalk behind, moving towards her. Fear spiraled up her spine, and she welcomed the soft breeze as she picked up the pace, eyes glued to the stairs leading up to the platform, praying silently that the train would linger. The sound of heavy feet running behind her made her bolt, dropping the water bottle and clenching her phone tighter as she fought through the pain and the haze of the alcohol and the delirious heat. So close to the stairs, so close, so—
A hard body slammed into hers, sending her to the sidewalk, phone skittering away from her over the concrete as her palms and knees sent pain signals. Another sharp cramp in her belly had her crying out before the male even grabbed her. Flipping her to her back, he straddled her hips, and she couldn’t even see his face since he was backlit by a blue streetlamp. All she could tell was that he was big, really big, and then he leaned forward and… sniffed her.
The rumbling growl in his chest sounded like a big animal, and she drew in a breath to scream but what came in on the air was a scent like warm spices and exotic flavors that spread across her tongue like a memory. Her clit pulsed, another rush of liquid heat, but as soon as he sat up sh
e reared her hand back and slammed the heel of her hand into his face. He jerked back just in time for it to land on his cheek instead of his nose, and then she screamed.
A heavy hand landed over her mouth, another male crouched beside her, hissing words that she couldn’t catch through the sound of her pulse in her ears. The weight of the male above her left her hips, but before she could try to escape another wave of pain blinded her to everything. Body curling in on itself as she wailed against the hand over her mouth. As the cry wound down, she tasted the skin at her lips and her tongue darted out to taste it again, except it was gone. Strong arms under her, lifting, carrying her into the dim space between two buildings. Deeper, down the alley, past trash and a dumpster, far away from the glittering rainbow of lights on the street.
“Help me, someone…” Her plea was too weak, too quiet, and as a hand landed over her mouth again, she heard a growl, a snap of teeth, and then the pain was back, making her writhe against a chest so broad it made her feel like a child. “Help?”

The sound of stuff being thrown around the alley was the first thing she was aware of as the pain ebbed again. She wanted to fight, to escape, but all Karissa could do was cry. “Someone help…”
“Oh, we’re about to help you, little Omega.” It was one of the males speaking, not the one holding her who released another low, rumbling growl from his chest… but that word, she recognized that word.
Omega. Where had she heard that?
“We know what you need.” Another male voice, closer, and then there was a roar above her head that made her ears ring. She was lifted as if she weighed nothing, held up by one large arm around her waist before being slammed against the wall. It knocked the air from her lungs, only made worse as she was shifted, legs pushed apart by the massive male in front of her.
